As artificial intelligence transforms every professional sector, the media and journalists are witnessing major changes, including in the way information is produced and consumed. The Euro-Mediterranean region is no exception. Newsrooms are facing urgent questions specific to their field regarding the responsible use of these tools.
To address this challenge, our network is offering a virtual training session, AI in the Newsroom: Where to Start: Ethics and Guidelines, within the framework of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2026. It will be led by Nathalie Samaha, AIGP, founder of NSM Consultancy and a member of the Euro-Mediterranean network of women journalists. Drawing on her expertise in AI governance and data protection, Nathalie will guide participants through a two-hour hands-on session designed for newsrooms and/or journalists seeking to adopt a responsible and informed approach to AI.
The workshop will examine the main risks posed by AI in journalism today, explain what the European Union’s AI Act means in practical terms for newsrooms, particularly the new transparency rules in Article 50, and take a closer look at the ongoing revision of the Society of Professional Journalists’’s Code of Ethics.
Participants will also learn about watermarking AI-generated text and images, before addressing one of the most pressing issues in visual journalism: AI-generated images in news reporting, and the ethical boundaries they may cross.
By the end of the session, participants will have drafted their own initial set of guidelines on AI and will leave with a clear and practical framework to bring back to their newsrooms. Prior to the workshop, each participant will complete a confidential self-assessment to help tailor the discussion to their own context and specific needs.
